Entry from: Lima, Peru
Entry Title: “Deepest Darkest Peru…”
Entry:
“Hola! Well Louise has traded in her burqa for a bikini (well not quite yet as it has been fricken freezing in Peru). Yes we`ve arrived in South America so stand by for updates including poor quality Spanish and input from Goose(John) who has joined us on this leg.
There is a fair bit of ground to cover and things to see in Peru as well as a range of climates to deal with. So far we´ve suffered in the cold fog of Lima whilst waiting for Iberia (aka Nightmeria), to send Lou´s bag to the correct country (it spent a three day siesta in Madrid en route). We then cooked ourselves in the desert at Nazca and sheltered under one quid plastic ponchos in Machu Pichu´s cloud forest. Still we´ve been pretty lucky with the weather so far. Hopefully our luck will continue for Friday´s 20 hour bus journey into the jungle on a road that is notorious for being washed away.
Anyway back to the wonders of Peru…
First stop was the desert area around Nazca (south of Lima). From 2,000 feet in the air you can view the strange Nazca Lines. The Nazca people had decided (for no apparent reason) to create massive drawings in the desert only viewable by the air. Given they did this a thousand years before the Wright Brothers, the academics have theorised that the Nazcas thought they´d be able to see the drawings from up high after getting completely whacked on halluciagenics during shamen rituals. The flight was very cool although we were glad we didn´t have full english breakfasts that morning as the pilot performed his best acrobatics to give us better views..
Another day trip we did in the desert was to see an ancient cemetary which had been desecrated by grave robbers. The resut being you can see the bodies on top of the earth rather than in it. A pretty morbid sight as the place is literally littered with human bones. There are loads of half wrapped mummies sitting in their tombs…
We boarded an overnight bus to Cusco after Nazca to meet up with Goose. True to form we met him in the Town Square accompanied by a young Norwegian lassie who was to stick around for this part of the Peru mission. Cusco was on the cool side… the kind of climate to lend itself to mucho procuring of llama cardies and alpacca beanies all in good taste of course…
After a couple of days of adjusting to the altitude etc we set off for Machu Pichu onboard a classic old train out of the wild west. Onboard we came across an employee of our old friends Iberia who readily agreed that his airline was indeed the most **** to fly the skies… He thought we got off lightly with a three day delay in getting luggage..
Machu Pichu was pretty amazing as you´d expect for a place touted as a wonder of the world. We decided to give the 4 day hike to get there a miss (plenty of time for hiking later…). You also have to book months in advance so it fell in the ´can´t be **** list…). We did, however, get the bus there at 5.30amto watch the clouds clear which was pretty spectacular. Basically those Inca fellas were a little bit crazy, choosing to build a city on top of sheer rock faces etc… but you´ve got to hand it to them as it makes for some great photos – cheers! There´s a vertigo inducing climb you can do up a needle of rock overlooking the main ruins. There are various terraces and a shrine etc to clamber on at the summit. Again, you´ve got to wonder what the hell they were thinking…
We had our first tast of jungle the next day or should i say the jungle had its first taste of us… Our legs still look like we´ve got the pox a week on. We climbed a neighbouring mountain for yet another view of Machu Pichu – can´t get enough.
Next stop was Lake Titicaca – highest navigable lake in world blah blah.. Again, mucho photo ops as we took a boat out to the man-made floating islands, basically villages on reeds. The serenity of the lakeside town – Puno – was broken only by Goose´s …”
