I talk about the radiation which comes from space and hits us. The sources for most of the radiation were our sun and extrasolar sources, i.e. deep space. Much of the radiation which bombarded me on my recent airplane trips went undetected by my device, being proton, neutron, and other such heavy nucleons. Generally speaking, most of the radiation which impacted me that flight was harmless, in the scheme of things. My entire trip of 10 hours (four 2.5 hour flights) probably subjected me to, at most, 3 mrems of radiation (30 uSv). This is very little radiation, being slightly less than 1% of my 360 mrems per year allocated for non radiation workers, like myself. I doubt that even pregnant women or children would have any problems. Anecdotally speaking, I have taken about 124 flights in my life averaging about 4 hours a flight (45min to 7 hours). If I use 4 hours as a base and multply that by 124 flights, I get about 496 hours of flight time. Further, mutilating that by 0.3 mrem/hr, I get 148.8 mrems of life time radiation exposure. This is mostly gamma, having a weighting factor of 1, thus 148.8 mrems from a 1488.0 mGy dose and using Cs137 as a reference source, though the actual energies are probably much higher than Cs137.
